Producer Info

The Moreau family arrived in Chablis in 1814, the family is today one of the most highly esteemed wine proprietors thanks to their quality wines from vineyards in the most prestigious appellations. No oak is used in their wine, either during vinification or in ageing, so is a typical example of a quality Chablis 1er Cru.

“The vineyard benefits from the morning sun, a cooler climate and a mineral rich soil, giving the wine a typical flinty mouth feel. The nose is discreet with hints of mint flowers and pineapple fruits. Well balanced and fresh with a long finish. This wine is perfect with seafood and white meats with sauce.” Louis Moreau, Winemaker.

They own 52 hectares in total, including a hectare of the Valmur Grand Cru, known for its richness, from which only 250 cases are made. This classic Chablis has all the minerality and wonderfully intense flavours that you would expect from a Premier Cru. Described by Chablis authority Andrew Jefford as “a domaine to follow”, this wine, from the 6th generation of the Moreau ‘dynasty’, is robust, rich and intensely fresh.

Regional Info

Chablis Premier Cru is a classification of the Chablis white wine appellation of Burgundy, in northern-central France. Wines made under this title from the Chardonnay grape are from vineyards identified as producing wines of higher quality than those classified simply as Chablis, though not quite reaching the level of the grand cru sites.

There are 40 named Chablis Premier Cru climats (vineyard sites), mostly located on the slopes of the Serein river valley near the historic town of Chablis. Many have a number of sub-vineyards (called lieux-dits in French) within them, bringing the total number of named Chablis Premier Cru vineyards to around 80.

While the grand cru vineyards are a contiguous group of plots on a single southwest-oriented hillside overlooking the town of Chablis, the premier cru sites are more dispersed through the complex topography in the hills and tributary valleys either side of the Serein river. However their orientation will tend to be – at least some degree – south-facing. The names of specific vineyards do not necessarily appear on wine labels. Firstly, producers in Chablis have the option, perhaps for marketing reasons, of using just the phrase “Chablis Premier Cru”. Additionally, if a wine is made from the grapes of more than one climat, it must be labeled as Chablis Premier Cru rather than taking a climat or vineyard name.

Winemakers Note

Hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel tank with indigenous yeasts at 18C. Full mlf in tank followed by 18 months ageing on the fine lees with weekly stirring.
