Hunter’s Offshoot Chardonnay, Marlborough, New Zealand

The Offshoot Chardonnay shows uplifted nose characters of brioche and hazelnut with concentrated apricot and rock melon that linger on and on. Weighty stone fruit and citrus fruits fill the front palate and support the structured style. The quality fruit and oak are integrated beautifully. The wine can be enjoyed now but will also develop and evolve over the next 5 years.

Winehack says: I was lucky enough to try this wine with the young winemaker James Macdonald last summer when he was over in the UK. The bottle lasted about 5 minutes… It’s absolutely delicious! If you love Burgundian Chardonnay and don’t normally drink New World for fear of it being over-oaked, well this is for you. The brioche and hazelnut notes work perfectly with the slightly more tropical Chardonnay flavours.

Tech Specs

100% barrel fermentation | 40% new, 60% 2 year old French oak barrels | 20% malolactic fermentation | 12 months’ barrel ageing

Old vine Mendoza Chardonnay was selected from our Rapaura vineyard. Handpicked fruit was gently pressed, 100% free-run juice immediately filled to large oak casks for a high solid, indigenous fermentation. Following fermentation, 20% went through natural malolactic fermentation.

The wine was aged in barrel on lees for 12 months and a further 6 months in tank before being racked and blended. The oak regime consisted of 100% French oak, 40% of which were new.

Fresh peach, pineapple and brioche flavours burst from the bottle and a lick of buttered toast and hazelnut hoist the wine into the stratosphere. James Macdonald is the young winemaker responsible for this delicious old – school wine.”
