Producer Info

Born in Monforte d’Alpone in 1963, Gianni Tessari started working in the family vineyards at a very young age and went on to study enology. With his brother he brought great success to the family winery, Cantine Tessari, including an astonishing 14 tre bicchieri in the Gambero Rosso. In 2013 he left the family business to start on his own and now has 55 hectares of vineyards from which he makes 3 Soaves, 4 red wines and 2 sparkling wines under the Durello label. As one would expect with his pedigree, the Soaves are impeccable, with the cru wines having immense power and minerality. Tai, a local red grape indigenous to Bereci, has been found to be genetically identical to Garnacha, Grenache and Cannonau, it has, however, developed here in isolation and has a character of its own.

Regional Info

Soave Classico wines are produced under the Soave DOC of Veneto, north-eastern Italy, specifically from Soave’s traditional classico vineyard zone. They are dry, still white wines made predominantly (at least 70%) from Garganega grapes. In the past decade Trebbiano Toscano and Pinot Bianco have been removed from the official makeup of Soave wines, leaving Chardonnay and Trebbiano di Soave (Verdicchio) as the only other grapes specifically sanctioned for use in the wines.

As is the case with so many Italian DOCs (well-known names like Chianti and Valpolicella among them), the Soave viticultural area was dramatically expanded in the mid–late 20th century. As the additional land rarely yielded the quality wine found in the classic production areas, this led to a drop in the overall quality of wine made under the Soave name. To remedy this, and to create distinction between the quality levels, the Soave Classico title was introduced to cover wines from the traditional, theoretically superior terroir.

Winemakers Notes

Like a statue the souls of which is concealed in the raw material: this is what this Cru is like, produced in a hilly area with a mainly calcareous soil. A Soave Classico Doc in which one can recognise immediately the limestone: an easy material to carve, friable. Extremely pliable. And like the most graceful works of art, the wine of such a terroir is gentle. Its elegance is immediately perceivable with the nose, in a very fine bouquet of white flowers and white pulp fruit. – Gianni Tessari winemaker
